ADS1113

The ADS1113 is a high-precision, 16-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC) manufactured by Texas Instruments, designed for low-power, precision measurement applications. It features a built-in programmable gain amplifier (PGA) with selectable gains of 1, 2, 4, or 8, allowing it to handle small differential input signals while maximizing the resolution of the ADC. The device supports both single-shot and continuous conversion modes, offering flexibility in power management and data acquisition strategies. This ADC operates on a supply voltage range from 2.7 V to 5.5 V, making it compatible with a wide variety of system voltages. Its I²C-compatible serial interface enables simple integration into existing embedded systems, with standard and fast mode support at up to 400 kHz. The device includes internal reference voltage (typically 2.048 V), eliminating the need for external reference components and simplifying circuit design. Additionally, it provides a temperature sensor output for monitoring ambient conditions within the system. The ADS1113 offers excellent performance with a maximum total unadjusted error (TUE) of ±0.01% and a typical noise level of 0.4 µV RMS over a 1 Hz to 10 Hz bandwidth. This makes it ideal for applications requiring high accuracy and stability, such as industrial process control, medical instrumentation, and energy metering. With its low quiescent current—just 150 µA in continuous mode and 1.1 µA in shutdown mode—it is optimized for battery-powered and portable devices. The device also includes configurable interrupt functionality via an INT pin, which can be used to signal when a conversion is complete or when a user-defined threshold is exceeded. This feature reduces host processor load and improves system responsiveness. Furthermore, the ADS1113 supports multiple address pins for up to four devices on the same I²C bus, enhancing scalability in multi-channel sensing systems. Its robust design includes ESD protection, thermal shutdown, and a wide operating temperature range from –40°C to +125°C, ensuring reliable operation in harsh environments. The compact 8-pin SOIC package further contributes to space-efficient PCB layouts. Overall, the ADS1113 delivers a compelling combination of precision, low power, and ease of use, making it a preferred choice for engineers designing accurate and efficient analog front-end solutions.
