AWR2544
The AWR2544 is a high-performance mmWave radar sensor from Texas Instruments, designed for automotive and industrial applications requiring precise object detection and tracking. It operates in the 76–81 GHz frequency band, enabling high-resolution sensing with excellent range and velocity accuracy. The device integrates a complete radar front-end, including a transceiver, low-noise amplifier (LNA), and baseband processing circuitry, all on a single chip, reducing system complexity and cost.
This sensor supports up to four transmit and four receive channels, allowing for advanced beamforming and multi-target tracking capabilities. It features a built-in digital signal processor (DSP) that performs real-time signal processing, including fast Fourier transforms (FFT) and Doppler processing, to extract target parameters such as distance, velocity, and angle. The AWR2544 also includes an ARM Cortex-M4F microcontroller for control and configuration, facilitating seamless integration into existing embedded systems.
One of its key advantages is its low power consumption, making it ideal for always-on applications like occupancy sensing or driver monitoring in vehicles. It supports multiple operational modes—including continuous wave (CW), chirp, and FMCW—enabling flexible use across various scenarios such as short-range radar (SRR), medium-range radar (MRR), and long-range radar (LRR). Additionally, it offers robust electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and immunity to interference, ensuring reliable performance in electrically noisy environments.
The AWR2544 is widely used in automotive applications such as blind-spot detection, lane change assistance, parking aid systems, and driver attention monitoring. In industrial settings, it enables motion detection, presence sensing, and automation tasks in smart manufacturing and robotics. Its compact form factor and integrated design reduce board space requirements, while its software development tools and reference designs from TI accelerate time-to-market for developers.
With support for industry-standard interfaces such as SPI, I2C, and UART, the AWR2544 can be easily connected to host processors or microcontrollers. It also includes features like hardware acceleration for radar processing, configurable sensitivity, and adaptive noise filtering to optimize performance under varying environmental conditions. These capabilities make the AWR2544 a versatile and powerful solution for next-generation sensing systems requiring high precision, low latency, and energy efficiency.
