BQ294502

The BQ294502 is a high-precision battery management system (BMS) IC designed by Texas Instruments for monitoring and protecting lithium-ion and lithium-polymer battery packs. It features integrated analog front-end circuitry that enables accurate measurement of cell voltage, temperature, and current through external sense resistors. With a typical voltage measurement accuracy of ±10 mV across a wide operating range, it ensures reliable state-of-charge (SoC) estimation and prevents overcharge or over-discharge conditions. This device supports up to 6 series-connected battery cells and includes built-in charge and discharge FET control logic, allowing it to manage the battery pack’s safety without requiring an external microcontroller. Its low quiescent current—less than 3 μA in sleep mode—makes it ideal for applications where power efficiency is critical, such as portable electronics, medical devices, and industrial tools. The BQ294502 incorporates advanced protection features including overvoltage, undervoltage, overtemperature, and overcurrent detection. These protections are configurable via internal registers, enabling customization based on specific battery chemistry and application requirements. The IC also includes a programmable timer function for safe shutdown during fault conditions, enhancing overall system reliability. Communication with the host system is facilitated through a standard I²C interface, allowing for real-time data exchange and configuration updates. This digital interface simplifies integration into existing embedded systems while reducing the need for additional hardware. Additionally, the device supports diagnostic reporting, including cell imbalance detection and fault logging, which improves maintenance and serviceability in field-deployed equipment. Designed for robust operation in harsh environments, the BQ294502 operates over a wide temperature range from -40°C to +85°C and features EMI immunity and electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection on all input pins. Its compact 32-pin QFN package enables space-efficient PCB designs, making it suitable for compact and high-density battery applications. Common use cases include consumer electronics like power tools, drones, and cordless appliances, as well as industrial and medical devices where safety, precision, and long-term reliability are paramount. By integrating multiple functions into a single chip, the BQ294502 reduces component count, lowers bill-of-materials cost, and accelerates time-to-market for battery-powered products.
