BQ32002
The BQ32002 is a highly accurate real-time clock (RTC) and calendar device designed for low-power applications, manufactured by Texas Instruments. It features an integrated temperature-compensated crystal oscillator (TCXO) that ensures exceptional timekeeping accuracy over a wide operating temperature range, typically within ±1 ppm from -40°C to +85°C. The device supports a 32.768 kHz crystal input and operates on a supply voltage ranging from 1.8 V to 3.6 V, making it suitable for battery-powered systems.
This RTC includes a built-in 32-bit counter that can be used as a timer or event counter, allowing precise measurement of elapsed time or frequency counting. It provides a full set of calendar functions including seconds, minutes, hours, day of the week, date, month, and year, with automatic leap-year correction through 2100. The internal power-loss detection circuitry ensures data integrity during unexpected power interruptions by automatically switching to a backup power source when available.
The BQ32002 communicates via an I²C-compatible serial interface, enabling efficient integration into embedded systems. It supports both standard and fast mode I²C speeds (up to 400 kbps), facilitating communication with microcontrollers and other system components. The device also includes programmable alarm functions—up to two independent alarms—that can trigger interrupts or wake-up signals, useful for scheduling tasks in low-power modes.
Designed for robust performance, the BQ32002 offers a comprehensive set of features including a watchdog timer, programmable square-wave output, and a 32-byte non-volatile SRAM memory for storing user data. This memory retains data even during power loss, provided a backup supply is connected. The chip’s ultra-low power consumption, typically less than 1 µA in standby mode, makes it ideal for portable and energy-sensitive applications such as medical devices, smart meters, industrial sensors, and consumer electronics.
Texas Instruments integrates advanced manufacturing techniques and rigorous quality control to ensure reliability and long-term stability in demanding environments. The BQ32002 is packaged in a compact 8-pin SOIC form factor, optimizing board space while maintaining ease of use in high-density designs. Its combination of precision timing, low power, and rich feature set positions it as a preferred solution for applications requiring reliable timekeeping without compromising system efficiency.
